Iridium is a rare, precious metal which is hard, brittle and has a low ductility, which makes it a difficult material to work. In appearance, it is a lustrous, silvery metal. It has an abundance in the earth's crust of approximately 3x10 6 ppm.
Iridium is one of the hardest and most corrosion resistant metals known, and is the 2nd most dense metal after osmium, being 20 times denser than water.
Iridium is unaffected by air, water and acids, and the only two substances that will dissolve it are molten sodium cyanide and potassium cyanide.

Uses of Iridium :
The main use of iridium is as a hardening agent for platinum alloys.
With osmium, it forms an alloy that is used for tipping pens, and compass bearings.
Iridium is used in making crucibles and other equipment that is used at high temperatures.
It is also used to make heavy-duty electrical contacts.
Iridium was used in making the international standard kilogram, which is an alloy of 90% platinum and 10% iridium.
Radioactive isotopes of iridium are used in radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer.
